Creative prompts

Playful prompts with useful constraints, for stories, poems, lyrics, worlds and games you play right in the chat.

Creative prompts are where a language model can be the most fun: it never runs out of ideas, never gets tired of "one more version", and happily plays along with a strange premise. This collection includes short stories built from three odd items, poems in fixed forms, song lyrics, worldbuilding for cities and place names, character backstories, scenes told only in dialogue, plot twists, bedtime stories, a fairy tale told from the villain's side, a four-panel comic script, riddles, a 100-word story challenge, a text adventure you play in the chat, and more.

Use these to play and to get unstuck, not to replace your own voice. Models lean toward familiar images and safe endings, so the prompts add constraints: concrete details instead of abstract words, a quiet surprise instead of a big twist, a fixed word count, one way of speaking per character. Constraints are what make the results interesting. When a draft feels flat, ask for something stranger, or ask for ten one-line ideas and develop the best one yourself.

One prompt uses image understanding: attach a photo and Llama 4 Maverick will write a short story from details it can actually see. Note that our chat reads images but does not create them, so the mood board prompt describes visuals in words for you to collect or sketch.

For a quick story from a few settings, use the Story Generator. Writers working on longer projects can read how writers use the Llama chat.

How to adapt these prompts

  • Add one unusual detail to any prompt; it pulls the result away from the obvious.
  • Set the length and point of view so the story fits where you will use it.
  • Ask for a rewrite with one change, such as a different narrator, instead of starting over.
  • For children's stories, read the result first and adjust anything that might worry a young listener.
