Llama vs ChatGPT
Llama is a family of models you can download and run anywhere. ChatGPT is OpenAI's finished assistant app. Here is how they differ and when each one makes more sense.

Two different kinds of AI
Comparing Llama with ChatGPT is a little like comparing an engine with a finished car. Llama is a family of AI models from Meta whose weights anyone can download, run on their own hardware, fine-tune and build into products. ChatGPT is OpenAI's assistant app: a polished product with its own models, features and plans, which you use through OpenAI's website and apps. You cannot download the models behind ChatGPT.
Both can answer questions, write, summarize, explain and help with code. The real differences are in control, privacy, features, freshness and cost. This page compares them as of October 2026. Our site is an independent Llama chat; we do not run ChatGPT or OpenAI models.

Models and freshness
OpenAI introduced its first GPT-6 models for paid customers in September 2026 and brought GPT-6 to everyone in ChatGPT on October 7, 2026. According to OpenAI, ChatGPT's paid tiers use GPT-6 Sol and the Free and Go tiers use GPT-6 Luna, both tuned for everyday conversation. In its API lineup, GPT-6 Astra is the flagship above them.
Llama's newest generation is Llama 4, released in April 2025, with training data up to August 2024. Meta's later models carry the name Muse; they are not Llama models, and Muse is not available in our chat. So in pure freshness ChatGPT is well ahead: its models are newer, and it can search the web, while a Llama chat without search only knows what was in its training data.
For the hardest reasoning, research and coding tasks, a current frontier model such as GPT-6 is usually the safer choice. For everyday writing, explanation, summaries and brainstorming, Llama 4 Maverick remains capable, and many people find it more than enough.
Features
ChatGPT is a full product. With GPT-6, OpenAI added what it calls Intelligent UI: answers can include charts, interactive diagrams, buttons, forms and small tools built right in the conversation, such as a calculator for a specific task. ChatGPT also handles file uploads and web search, and offers many other features across its plans.
Llama itself is just the model. What you can do with it depends on the app you use. In our chat you get a clean conversation with four Llama models, image questions with Llama 4, and history kept in your browser, but no web search, no file uploads and no image generation. Other apps and your own setup can add tools around Llama, from document search to agents.
Privacy and control
This is where Llama stands apart. Because the weights are public, you can run Llama on your own laptop or server with tools like Ollama or LM Studio, and nothing you type ever leaves your machine. Companies can host it inside their own infrastructure and fine-tune it on private data. See run Llama locally.
With ChatGPT your conversations go to OpenAI, and you rely on OpenAI's policies and settings for how they are handled. For most everyday use that is fine; for confidential documents or regulated data, the ability to self-host Llama can matter a lot.
In our online Llama chat, messages pass through our server and an inference provider. We do not store message text, and your history stays in your browser.
Cost
For individuals, both have free options. ChatGPT has Free and Go tiers plus paid Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans. Llama is free to download, and our chat is free within a daily allowance of messages.
For developers, the token prices differ widely. On OpenRouter, GPT-6 Luna is listed at $0.10 input and $0.50 output per million tokens, GPT-6 Sol at $2 and $10, and GPT-6 Astra at $10 and $50. Llama 4 Maverick is $0.1875 and $0.6525, and Llama 3.1 8B just $0.05 and $0.08 (OpenRouter list price, Oct 2026). Running Llama on your own hardware has no per-token cost at all. The GPT-6 models accept files, images and text and are listed with a context window of 1,050,000 tokens. Our Llama API guide shows how to call Llama.
Choose Llama if…
- you want to run AI offline or keep data entirely on your own machines;
- you need to fine-tune a model or ship it inside your own product;
- you want low token costs for high-volume, everyday tasks;
- you prefer a simple free chat without an account, like ours.
Choose ChatGPT if…
- you need the newest frontier model for hard reasoning, research or coding;
- you want answers that include current information from the web;
- you value interactive answers, file uploads and a broad feature set in one app;
- you are happy to use a hosted service and its plans.
Many people use both: ChatGPT for demanding or up-to-date tasks, and Llama for private, offline or low-cost work. For other comparisons see Llama vs Gemini and Llama vs DeepSeek, or read what Llama is.
