What the Code Assistant does

The Code Assistant is a quick programming helper in your browser. Describe a function and get working code, paste a snippet and an error message to find the bug, or ask what an unfamiliar piece of code does. It can also review code for problems, write unit tests and add comments. Code comes back in formatted blocks with syntax highlighting, ready to copy.

It runs on Llama 4 Maverick, Meta's open-weight model, which Meta describes as producing multilingual text and code. We reach it through a cloud inference provider. The tool is told to name the cause of a bug before fixing it, to avoid inventing library functions, and to say what you should check when the answer depends on versions or code it cannot see.

How to use it

  1. Paste code or describe the task. Include the error message and what you expected to happen. For new code, list inputs, outputs and any constraints.
  2. Choose the task: write code, find and fix bugs, explain code, review and improve, write tests, or add comments.
  3. Choose the language, or leave it on "Detect automatically". The list includes Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Java, C#, C++, C, PHP, Go, Rust, Kotlin, Swift, Ruby, SQL, Bash and HTML with CSS.
  4. Press Generate (or Ctrl+Enter). Copy the code from the result, Regenerate for another approach, or Continue in chat to iterate on it.

Tips for useful answers

  • Paste the full error. The exact message and the line it points to say more than "it doesn't work".
  • Keep snippets focused. Paste the function that fails and the code that calls it, not the whole project. Remove keys, passwords and private data first.
  • Mention versions. "Python 3.12", "React 18" or "PostgreSQL 16" helps avoid answers written for an older API.
  • Ask for explanations at your level. In the chat, add "I am a beginner" or "skip the basics" to change the depth.
  • Iterate in the chat. After the first answer, Continue in chat and ask for edge cases, better names or a version without a library.

Example

Request: Why do I get "TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'price')"?

function total(items) {
  let sum = 0;
  for (let i = 0; i <= items.length; i++) {
    sum += items[i].price;
  }
  return sum;
}

Answer (shortened): The loop runs one step too far. Array indexes go from 0 to items.length - 1, but the condition i <= items.length also runs the loop when i equals the length. At that point items[i] is undefined, and reading .price from it throws the error. Change the condition to i < items.length, or use items.reduce((sum, item) => sum + item.price, 0).

Limits and safe use

  • Test before you ship. Generated code can look right and still fail on edge cases. Run it, read it and add tests.
  • It cannot run your code. The tool does not execute anything or see your files. It reasons from the text you paste.
  • Knowledge has a cut-off. Meta gives August 2024 as the cut-off of the training data. Newer libraries or API changes may be missing, so check the official documentation.
  • Security matters. Review generated code for injection risks, unsafe input handling and secrets in the code before using it in production.
  • Licenses. If you reuse code in a commercial project, make sure it does not reproduce someone else's licensed code.

FAQ

Is the Code Assistant free?

Yes, with no account. Each request uses one message from your free daily allowance, shared with the chat and the other tools and reset daily.

Which programming languages does it support?

The menu lists 16 common languages plus automatic detection. Others, such as Dart, Scala or Lua, often work too if you name them in your request.

Can I paste a whole project?

No. The box takes a few thousand characters. Paste the relevant files or functions. In the chat you can choose Llama 4 Scout, the model with the longest context, for bigger pieces of code.

Can I explain code in my own language?

Yes. Write your request in your language and the explanation follows it, while the code itself stays in the programming language.

Where can I learn to use AI for programming?

Read our guide on AI for coding, or start a debugging prompt in the chat. For math behind an algorithm, try the Math Solver.
