What the Story Generator does

The Story Generator turns a small idea into a complete short story. One sentence is enough: a lighthouse keeper with a strange letter, a robot who wants to bake, two friends lost in a city at night. Choose a genre, an audience and a length, and you get an original story with a bold title, a clear beginning, middle and end, natural dialogue and an ending that pays off what came before.

It runs on Llama 4 Maverick, Meta's open-weight model, through a cloud inference provider. The tool creates its own characters, keeps the content suitable for the audience you pick and avoids stock phrases. Stories for young children stay gentle, with nothing frightening.

How to use it

  1. Write your idea. A character, a place, a problem or a single "what if". Add names, a setting or a moral if you want more control. You can also click an example idea.
  2. Pick a genre: surprise me, fantasy, science fiction, mystery, adventure, funny, bedtime story, romance or spooky (atmospheric, never gory).
  3. Choose the audience: young children, older kids and teens, all ages, or adults. This sets vocabulary, sentence length and how intense the story can be.
  4. Choose the length: short (about 300 words, a few minutes to read aloud), medium (about 600) or long (about 1,000).
  5. Press Generate. Copy the story, Regenerate for a completely different version of the same idea, or Continue in chat to change the ending or write the next chapter.

Ideas for better stories

  • Give the character a want. "A shy robot who wants to enter a cake contest" gives the story a direction; "a robot" does not.
  • Add one unusual detail. A bakery on a ferry, a detective who is afraid of the dark. Specific details make stories memorable.
  • Make it personal. For a bedtime story, include your child's name, favorite animal or a small worry the story could gently address.
  • Build a series. Continue in chat and ask for the next adventure with the same characters, or let your child choose what happens next.
  • Use it to practice writing. Generate a story, then rewrite the ending yourself, or ask in the chat for feedback on your own version.

Example

Idea: A shy robot who works in a bakery secretly wants to enter the town's cake contest.

Settings: Funny, young children, short.

The Quietest Baker

Every morning, Bolt rolled out the dough at Mrs. Pina's bakery without making a sound. He never beeped, never whirred, and never, ever told anyone about the drawing he kept in his chest drawer: a cake shaped like the moon, with silver sprinkles for stars.

"The cake contest is on Saturday," said Mrs. Pina, sticking a poster on the window. Bolt's lights blinked very fast. Then very slowly. Then, for the first time ever, he beeped.

Limits and fair use

  • Read it before sharing with children. The tool aims for age-appropriate content, but you know your child best. Skim the story first.
  • Originality. Stories are newly written for each request, but common themes and phrases can resemble existing books. If you publish a story, edit it substantially and make it your own.
  • School assignments. If a teacher asked for your own creative writing, use the tool for ideas or feedback, not the finished piece. See our guide on AI for students.
  • Length is approximate. Stories may run a little shorter or longer than the selected length.

FAQ

Is the Story Generator free?

Yes, and there is no account to create. Each story uses one message from your free daily allowance, shared with the chat and the other tools and refreshed every day.

Can I get stories in other languages?

Yes. Write your idea in your language and the story is written in it. This works well for reading practice in a language you are learning.

Can I use famous characters?

The tool creates its own characters. Characters from books, films and games belong to their owners, so we recommend original ones, especially for anything you share publicly.

Can it write a longer story or a book?

A single run gives up to about 1,000 words. For longer work, plan chapters in the chat and write them one at a time. Our AI writing tips help with longer projects.

Can I write an interactive story?

Yes. Start a choose-your-path story in the chat and pick what happens after each part. For other kinds of creative text, try the AI Writer.
